On Christmas eve Eve, we decided we better make a run for KS early because of impending weather. Before all the bad weather forecasts, we had planned to stay in West Des Moines until Christmas day so our kids could wake up in their own beds on Christmas morning.
That night, we stayed up very late and got up early the next morning. Finally left at 1pm on Christmas Eve Day. Luckily, the weather in Iowa was rain, but only 34' as we were leaving. We ended up making it to KC before the roads got too bad with sleet and ice. We stuck with it and continued to Ottawa.
In Ottawa, our first stop was Grandpa Gilroy's (my dad's)where we were able to drop Buddy off until Saturday when the kennel opened. We then made the trek to Grandma Shirley's (my mom's)to unload and dress for Christmas Eve with Dan's family. As we were driving back into town, it was snowing really hard and it was a pretty scary drive. But, we made it to Dan's parents and had a great time catching up with his family and opening presents.
On the way back to my mom's in the country, it was a very treacherous, scary drive. The drifts were overtaking the roads and it was very hard to tell where the road was in contrast with the ditches. We finally made it back and was happy to be in a warm house.
After pj's were on, we read the "Night before Christmas," set out cookies and milk for Santa and got ready for a nice, warm sleep.
On Christmas morning, we actually slept in until 9am (the kids too). As soon as we awoke, we ran out to see if Santa had come to visit! Sure enough, Anna had a sweet 2-wheel scooter and Owen had a racetrack under the tree. The stockings were full with some really neat things too!
We were supposed to go to my brother's house for Christmas, but both he and my mom live in the country, so we were all staying put! The snow has been blowing and drifting. My sister couldn't get here from KC either so we decided to postpone until today.
Unfortunately, we're still stuck. The plows have not come and we don't know when they will. Luckily, we've had a wonderful time here and it's been nice not having much to do but sit and be still. We're still hoping the plows will come soon because we all want to see my brother's and sister's families. We're also hoping to make it out tomorrow as my cousin from the west coast is here and we really want to see her!
Darn, this snow follows us EVERYWHERE!!! I'll write more soon!!
