So...Becky goes to a Tastefully Simple party tonight so it's just me watching the kids. It should be a rather quiet evening as Anna wants to go outside and play Frisbee. So we head back behind the apartment where there is some space to play and I show Anna how to throw a Frisbee. We play that for a while when suddenly Owen points and says "ball" (one of his favorite words/toys). There's a medium-sized ball that someone had left outside so Anna runs and gets it. She decides that she wants to play soccer now.
We start kicking the ball around and in my infinite Daddy wisdom, I feel it is my duty to ensure she knows how to properly kick a ball (especially since she has flip/flops on) and demonstrated the "proper technique". I kick the ball and unknowingly set off a chain of events for the night.
That ball made a straight line for Anna's head to which it connected with her left cheek. She stands there completely stunned for a second trying to determine what just happened and then realizing ouch -- which then means she believes she is certainly bleeding and massive drama that would win her the next Oscar but nonetheless, the very loud crying begins. I feel terrible and try to comfort and after some hugs/sorrys/kisses and recommending we go back to Frisbee, all is well -- minus the big red ball mark on her cheek.
We head inside and it's time for baths. I start the water in the tub running and Anna asks me about how to make a Popsicle in a cup with a stick. We decide it would be good to use lemonade and I get the plastic wrap out of the kitchen drawer to start it all but then hear the shower running. Uh...I didn't start the shower. I run into the bathroom and see that Owen has pulled up the lever to change the tub to be filling to now have the shower going. This would not normally be a problem but the shower head was pointed OUTSIDE the tub -- A LOT of water was already on the floor and Owen is just standing there -- now soaked but quite happy. I quickly turn it off and grab towels to start cleaning up the water.
So now fast forward -- baths are done for both kids and I've dried off Owen. He runs away from me into his/Anna's room and as I'm chasing him with a diaper, he stops by Anna's bed and decides it's time to pee. I got the diaper over in front of him at the point he was finished. So now I get his diaper on, I'm pulling Anna's blanket off her bed, going and getting the spot cleaner and cleaning up the mess that is also on the floor. The towels that I used to clean up the water in the bathroom were added to the blanket now in the washer.
Anna wants to watch a movie and is also hungry and thirsty. She keeps telling me that I can choose for her between having hot chocolate or hot cider (it was 80 degrees out) but she can also have some fruit because she tells me it's good for her to eat fruit. I tell her the choice is water and give her a banana. Owen sees the banana and wants one too -- so now both are eating again and I'm thinking that must be enough food. Nope. Next for Anna is yogurt and then grapes. Owen keeps insisting on eating grapes but will take it, bite into it, spit it out and then leave it somewhere in the apartment. I think the number was around four total that I found -- I'll probably find some more tomorrow.
The kids are asleep and I've made it through the night. Becky leaves in the morning for a two-day girls weekend and I'm left wondering what the rest of Saturday and Sunday will bring...
